Falcon Reintroduction...

The World Bird Sanctuary has long been involved in the preservation of threatened and endangered bird species.

Due to the pesticide DDT, the Peregrine Falcon was on the brink of extinction, but the efforts of dedicated conservation organizations, like the World Bird Sanctuary, have offered the Peregrine Falcon a second chance.

In 1991 WBS celebrated the hatching of the first wild Peregrine Falcon chick in Missouri in over 100 years. The parents were released years earlier by WBS.

Efforts continue throughout the St. Louis area to reestablish wild populations of this valuable species.

"Hack" boxes, or man-made nests located high above the ground, house young peregrines.

WBS staff care for the youngsters until they are ready to leave the "nest".
