Come over to the dark side and meet those amazing birds that exist by moonlight. Owl Prowls offer an exciting opportunity to learn more about the amazing life of owls. Spend an evening with a WBS naturalist who will introduce you to live owls and their unique calls. Then, take an easy night hike through our grounds to try to call in a wild owl!

Join us for Eagle Days in several locations in Missouri and Illinois during the months of January and February. World Bird Sanctuary’s Eagle Days will feature free education programs including a Bald Eagle and your questions answered by our knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

This intensive 4-day workshop will cover many topics including: Establishing your own program – permits, insurance, facilities, staff & volunteers; working with and training your bird – manning and positive reinforcement, desensitizing; choosing the correct species to work with; transportation – crates, permits, driving, flying, shipping; housing – mews, jumpboxes, A-frames, flight cages, climate, hotwire, substrates; perch types – bow, platform, screen, etc. – which perch works best for what species; diets – food types, frozen vs. live, storage, prep, vitamins; training your birds for flying – weight management, base weights, target weights, flyer food. Join us for our 2nd annual Poke-HUNT! Play Pokémon Go and bring your Pokémon cards to trade and play! The event will begin with a LIVE Pokémon bird show at 10am in our amphitheater featuring: Braviary, Pidgeot, Mandibuzz, Noctowl, Rowlet, Talonflame and Merkrow. Come see the real-life Pokémon for yourself! Following the show at 11:30, there will be a Poke-HUNT where kids can search the grounds for their very own Pokémon characters – that they can keep! Limited number available, so first find, first keep (limit one per finder). Photo opportunities will be available with your favorite Pokémon and 2 very special guests! Be sure to stop in our Nature Center and meet Sandshrew, Galvantula, Onix, Buneary, Torterra, Swoobat and Charmander. Don’t forget we have 3 Pokemon-GO gyms onsite along with 15 Pokemon-GO stops!

Visitors can get up close without cage bars in the way. Species will rotate throughout the day and during the event, our Naturalists will free-fly a bird!

Your “at sea” days will be filled with interactive World Bird Sanctuary offerings such as a trivia night, a photography class and wildlife educational talks – along with all that amazing food and drink!

International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) & World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) have unified as one to increase global awareness! The campaign will now be know as World Migratory Bird Day, with the 2018 theme being “Unifying our Voices for Bird Conservation” This will focus on the development of its new identity and the need for people celebrating WMBD around the world to communicate and learn from each other, across borders, within and between the world’s flyways. Come join us for a special adventure every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:30 and 1:00 for “Story Time with Bob”! Whooo knows where Bob will take us each week…a squishy swamp…an ivy-covered castle…or a enchanted forest…all we know is that it’s sure to involve birds and be super fun! Each half hour will include a story and music. Come on down to the library on our display line and see what this week’s adventure will be! Each program lasts about 30 minutes and has both stories and songs.

Watch our field studies crew catch, band and release song birds on site as part of the World Bird Sanctuary Songbird Population Study! Join the World Bird Sanctuary Field Studies Team for a bird banding demonstration which includes: capturing birds in mist nets, extracting birds from nets, banding (placing an aluminum anklet with a unique ID number) and recording scientific data (height, weight, tail length, etc.). All information collected helps songbirds nationwide as part of the World Bird Sanctuary Songbird Population Study and the MAPS National Program on Songbird Study. We start at 8:00am with setting up the mist nets and getting the banding station set up to measure, record data, band the birds captured. You may even get to release the bird back into the wild!

Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never ask, “What do I do now?” In this 2 day course you will learn skills and abilities to make sound decisions in emergency situations. From the Patient Assessment System through traumatic, medical, and environmental emergencies, you’ll experience a wide variety of topics designed to prepare you to act if an accident occurs. This course is ideal for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals in remote locations. The course includes a 1-hr break. 16-17 year-olds must arrive with a completed Release of Liability form, but do NOT need an accompanying adult. Participants younger than 16 must contact NOLS (Wilderness_Medicine_Admissions@nols.edu). No prerequisites. Successful completion results in a Wilderness First Aid certification. You may be eligible to recertify your NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, or Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certification on this course. Please review NOLS Wilderness Medicine recertification policies (https://www.nols.edu/en/courses/wilderness-medicine/recertify/) prior to registering.
