We are humbled to have reached a remarkable milestone: the World Bird Sanctuary has now served the avian world from our St. Louis home for fifty years. What Walter C. Crawford, Jr. started in his backyard with a few injured birds, volunteered time, and donated supplies has grown into one of the most unique and impactful raptor conservation organizations in the world. What we are most proud of is our perseverance. After losing Walt in 2015, we doubled down on the mission and built on everything he created. In rehabilitation, that means treating over 750 raptor patients each year in our Kathryn G. Favre Foundation Raptor Hospital. In conservation, it means managing breeding programs for some of the world's most endangered bird species. On our grounds, it means protecting native habitat for local wildlife, providing a permanent home for birds too injured to return to the wild, and giving families unbelievably up-close encounters with birds like Bald Eagles. And like Walt always understood, it means inspiring the next generation; something we do through the over 900 education programs conducted each year across the Midwest. As we look ahead to our next fifty years, we see a world presenting new and growing threats to bird species both at home and abroad. Meeting these challenges head-on requires fresh thinking and bold action. Over the past year, we have been developing an ambitious new Master Site Plan to carry out all aspects of our mission forward for the next half-century.
